5 Must-See Summer Movies

{Thanks Oscartini! I personally cannot wait to see Eclipse when I get back from Ireland! PS – A very very very happy birthday to one of my best friends in the world, Miss. Christine aka Salt. Love you! Can’t wait to celebrate when I’m back! Enjoy your day :)}

With the mercury hovering in the 80’s and 90’s and another hot, humid summer set to take over Boston, what activity is the perfect blend of popcorn, entertainment and air conditioner? A movie, of course! Seeing as I blog about all things movies over at Oscartini, I was psyched when Colleen asked if I would share my top summer movies while she’s living it up in Ireland!

So now without further ado, here are the 5 must-see summer movies of 2010. *Disclaimer: this list is by no means definitive and could indeed not be *your* cup of tea J

First up is Going the Distance, starring real-life on and off again couple Drew Barrymore and Justine Long (AKA the Mac Guy). Out on August 27, this romcom looks at the long-distance relationship between Drew’s character Erin and Justin’s Garrett, complete with its ups and downs. If the trailer is any indication, expect to laugh and cry in this late summer arrival!

Next up is a movie I know many people (ok, mostly women!) are psyched to see: Eclipse. The third movie in the Twilight Saga is out June 30, and unless you’ve been living under a rock the last 2 years, you know what Team Edward and Team Jacob mean! From what I’ve seen, this is a movie for boyfriends too, with a lot of vampire and wolf battle action sure to please everyone

Eat, Pray, Love, starring the always-wonderful Julia Roberts is out on August 13 and directed by Glee creator Ryan Murphy. Based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir of the same name, Eat Pray, Love promised to deliver some seriously awesome settings, with portions of the movie taking place in Italy, Indonesia and India. This is Julia’s first starring role since last year’s Duplicity, which didn’t do very well; I anticipate this will be a big hit this August!

Directed by The Dark Knight’s Christopher Nolan and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Inception looks like this summer’s biggest thriller.  Out on July 16, word on the street is that this is one movie that you will really need to pay attention to, or else you’ll get lost, which doesn’t always make the best summer movie! IMDB’s synopsis on Inception is: “In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a single idea within one’s mind can be the most dangerous weapon or the most valuable asset.” Sounds cool, right?

And now, the absolute must-see movie of the summer is…Toy Story 3! Out since June 18th, Woody and Buzz’s third and final installment has been at the top of the box office and has been receiving great reviews from audiences and critics, with some early Oscar buzz too! Andy’s toys are donated to a daycare center when Andy goes off to college; expect to see lots of new characters and an awesome big screen experience for all ages!

So there you have it Daily Craic readers, my top picks for this summer’s best movies! Do you agree or disagree with any of these picks? Which movies are you looking most forward to seeing this summer?

My big sister is getting married

The Foodies at work were nice enough to ask little ol’ me to write a guest post for their blog. I of course said yes! Not only do I love their posts, recipes, tweets, etc. but they are my twitter friends for God’s sake, of course I would write a post for them. I got their back.

The topic was ‘If you were stranded on an island what one food could you just not live without?’ My answer: hamburgers. Scrumptious hamburgers. Read the full post here, and thanks again foodies!

On another note – tomorrow is the big day! Well, not the big day (as in Wedding day) but the big day as in travel day. Colin and I leave tomorrow around 6:30 pm for our flight to Ireland, we will get in to Dublin around 8:30 am Thursday morning. We rented a car (please say a prayer for us. This could potentially be the end of our relationship… I can see it now, Colin: “Colleen, read the map please, stop falling asleep, I need you to help!”, Me: “Colin, slow down! These roads are very narrow! Ahh wrong side of the road!”)

Thursday and Friday we have some wedding prep stuff, Friday afternoon we have the rehearsal and then the rehearsal dinner, after that we’ll have a “welcome” party for all the guests to hang out, catch up and share our excitement! Saturday my Dad is hosting a golf tournament for those interested in playing (most of the men…) and the rest of us are headed to the Rock of Cashel, Saturday night we have Bru Boru – a traditional Irish show and dinner. It’s a lot of fun. :)

Sunday the women of the bridal party are headed to the spa for some pampering, and Sunday night all the bridesmaids plus Meg are going to stay at my cousin Aisling and Christians house so we can have a little slumber party. Monday is the BIG DAY! I may or may not have a few tricks up my sleeve… You’ll have to stay tuned….

After the wedding my parents are hosting a breakfast for everyone on Tuesday morning right before Meg and Matt head to Greece (so pumped for them!) And then Colin and I will be on our way for a few days of traveling – we’re going to Galway for two nights and Dublin for one. Any Irish pro’s out there have suggestions for us??

So I still feel as though I have a TON to do. Tonight is going to be a late one! I’m working from home for a few hours tomorrow so I should be able to get a lot done tonight (hopefully everything) and if need be, finish up tomorrow.

I can’t believe my big sister is getting married – we’ve been thinking/talking/dreaming of the day one of us would get married since we were little girls. She has been my best friend for twenty-four years now. I’ve looked up and admired her since the day I was born. She has taken such good care of me, and now she has Matthew to take such good care of her. Matthew and I have been friends since before they started dating – I am a huge fan of his! I’ve always been cheering him on. I wish both Megan and Matt only the best life has to offer – plenty of smiles, compromises, babies, and blessings. Much laughter, tenderness, trust, adventure and excitement. What a wonderful journey to be on together. They are going to kick ass at marriage! I couldn’t be happier for two people. They are amazing and I love them both.

Meg and Matt!

Heheh, credit goes to either Moll or Kelly on this one, I forget which one!

PS – I am not going to be able to make it through this trip dry eyed. Hopefully I can control myself during the ceremony/my MOH toast. Wish me luck – I’ll need it!

I’ll miss you all while I’m in Ireland, but don’t forget to still visit the daily craic, I have some AMAZING guest posts coming ‘atcha. You truly don’t want to miss this. Thanks to all who have helped! {Twitter/blogger friends are thebomb.com.}

Will be back on the 8th (with TONS of pictures!), enjoy the craic while I’m away!

Healthworks Blogger Bash!

Last night I attended the Healthworks Blogger Bash and it was awesome! I had such a great time mixing and mingling with all the fabulous women in attendance (there were about twenty of us.) Since I’m a relatively new blogger to the scene it was great to ask questions and get some answers from the more experienced bloggoddesses (just made that word up woopwoop.)

We started with a spin class at Healthworks Back Bay (I was so late! but snuck in a pretty decent workout for those 25 minutes!) The instructor Eden Kessler was amazing, she played such good music. I wanted to hop off the bike and dance. After the class we showered and got ready in the beautiful locker rooms (I had some Vita Coco coconut water as well – very refreshing.) We met back in the lobby once everyone was beautified and headed to the T. All twenty bloggers plus the wonderful Healthworks ladies – Hannah and Judith – hopped on the T with all our swag. I felt like a kid again on a school field trip! :) The only thing we were missing were those leash things to hold everyone together!

Healthworks YOU ARE THE BOMB.COM!

Blogger bunch making our way to Alibi...

Next stop was Alibi in the Liberty Hotel – which was once the Charles Street Jail. I had never been before so I was very excited! I’ve heard great things about Alibi and I must say, they are all true. The decor is fun, playing on the jail theme – celebrity mug shots line the walls which is really funny. There is an awesome outdoor patio – which was packed (so obviously the place is good!), the couches are comfy, the lighting is perfect, the food provided for us from Scampo = SO delicious.

Such a glam mug shot

Introductions :)

We were provided with amazing cocktails (thanks to Ripe drink mixers and Double Cross Vodka!) They were perfection- I started off with the strawberry Tom Collins drink they had going on (including some basil in there which was such a pleasant surprise – probably going to be my new summer drink) and then I moved on to a Bloody Mary (nice little kick to it) and even had a shrimp and a (green – my fave) olive on top. YUM!

Strawberry deliciousness

I heart Bloody Mary's

Some food pictures… (Coincidentally I am starving right now and these pics arent helping!) -

I think I had dreams about this last night...

It was so great to meet a whole new group of people! All the bloggers were there – Meghan, Chelsee, Leslie, Jean, Julie, Alicia, Elina, Tina, the Healthworks bloggers, and a bunch of other fabulous ladies. Nice to chat with everyone!

When I got home I was blown away by the wonderful swag bags we received – can’t thank Hannah, Judith and all of Healthworks enough! So generous. :)

Siggi's bag!

Swag!

We got popchips, Mad Hectic Oatmeal, Healthworks hat, Luna bars, Eversave.com gift cards, City Sports Boston t-shirt, NUX sportsbra, 50-minute massage at Healthworks, Siggis coupons, a gift card to SkinHealth Centers for a spray tan, complimentary cut and color from Rock, Paper, Scissors hair salon on Newbury Street, a free task from Task Rabbit, and MORE. Like seriously, outrageously good swag! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Healthworks is also giving the daily craic readers a free trial! Get your 3-day pass here!

The blogger bash was such a success and I am so happy I got to be apart of it! I love hanging out with other smart, interesting ladies (cause obviously I’m smart and interesting too – toot toot – that’s me tooting my own horn.)

OK I’m out – have a great weekend! HAPPY FRIDAY!

Is there anyone out there who WASN’T born in May?

First and foremost – HAPPY (belated, only on the blog though!) BIRTHDAY to my AMAZING older sister, Meg!!! I love you so much. I have and always will look up to you because you have always been the perfect role model. I hope you had a great day.

Back in our youth

I love you!

Meg’s birthday was this past Monday, May 10th. We celebrated Sunday night with Matt and his family in NH – we had a lovely dinner and a delicious cake! Monday morning I didn’t have to go into work until 10am (started the new job!) so I took Meg to breakfast at the Lantern Diner in Andover. It’s a really cute, little place – you truly feel like you’re in someone’s kitchen.

I got Meg a turquoise sun dress with a gold necklace + bracelet + sandals to tie it all together as well as a really cute green + white striped bikini with gold embellishments. All to be put away and saved for Meg and Matt’s honeymoon in Greece! So excited for them. :)

Now, tomorrow is my wonderful Father, Kevin’s birthday! So HAPPY BIRTHDAY POPS! I love him so much and could never even begin to thank him for all that he does for me and continues to do for me. I truly am a lucky lady.

Dad and I dancing at Catie and Chris' wedding!

Mom, Dad, Molly and her BFF (and Mescall favorite) Meghan are coming up to MA tomorrow to celebrate both Meg as well as Dad’s birthdays and to attend Meg’s NH wedding shower on Saturday. Tomorrow night we’re going out to dinner somewhere in Andover and Saturday we’ll be going to dinner somewhere in Newburyport (where my parents are staying…) Should have some excellent food to talk about over the weekend! I’m hoping to try something new!

So I must apologize for 150% slacking on the blog. I have been having such a tough time balancing everything. I often feel as though there are not enough hours in the day. Then I feel guilty because there are people working who have children and a house to take care of, or there are people legitimately saving the world and here I am complaining because I work, I have to buy some gifts or run some errands and then I don’t have the energy to blog. Well, enough is enough! I really enjoy blogging and I’m gonna make it happen. I’m putting together some sort of schedule. I need to please the people! (Are there any ‘people’ out there I am aiming to please?)

Sometimes I get a little carried away (‘Carried away’ reminds me of SATC which reminds me HOW EXCITED I AM FOR THE MOVIE fyi) with how much I write for each blog post, so this is my warning to my fabulous readers: posts will probably be shorter. I am going for quality not quantity I guess. Something like that. Why? Because I am the boss of this blog. And.I.Say.So.

PS. I started my new job on Monday. I felt like it was the first day of school. It has been amazing so far and I truly am loving it. Everyone is friendly, helpful and easy-going. It seems like a great atmosphere. I am excited and extremely interested in the work I am doing. I feel as though I definitely made the right decision. I also feel like I finally have some direction in my life (at least career-wise!) It’s taken some time, but I feel as though I’m on to something… I like this feeling…

Don’t have plans this weekend?

We all need to lighten up on ourselves!

Goodnight xo

Happy birthday to two of my favorite people…

Posted on

Well, I guess I’ll just go ahead and blame my lack of blogging on A- the fact that this spring time heat wave has been melting my brain, B – I celebrated my 24th birthday on Saturday so since I’m the boss when it comes to my blog, I gave myself a few days off, and C – I’ve been too traumatized hearing about the lack of water in the Boston area even though I haven’t even been affected by it…

My brother also celebrated his birthday on Saturday. Yes, we were born on the same day. No, we are not twins. Yes, we are awesome. I was Patrick’s gift for his second birthday! (lucky him!)

So, on that note… HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAT! Wish we could have celebrated together (he’s in LA) – next year we must!

Back in the day joint

Patrick sharing with me - how cute!

All the sibs!

For my birthday, Colin and I headed to Long Island to hang out with the parentals and my grandfather. Saturday morning we did a quick breakfast at Glen’s Dinette in Babylon (SUCH a great breakfast spot) then I went with my mom to get fitted for my bridesmaid dress for the wedding! It’s an awesome dress, I really love it. Will share pictures eventually…

Next up was the beach! It was SO gorgeous on Saturday that it would have been a sin not to get down to the beach while visiting LI. We parked at Robert Moses field five and headed to Kismet on Fire Island.

Now, in order to get to Kismet (while walking on the beach), you must take a stroll through the nudie beach. This is always interesting. You know what makes it even more interesting? Walking through it with your parents and boyfriend! Why not make things awkward on a nice Saturday afternoon?

Walking through a nude beach (as one of the ‘others‘ – ‘others‘ being those who opted to wear clothing) is a bit strange. Should you look? Should you avert your eyes? If you are going to look, if you should then make eye contact (if you’re not looking at other things….) – should you smile, or quickly look away? Is it acceptable to stare? Is it okay to giggle like a little schoolgirl? Should you just cave in and strip down yourself? Be all ‘natural and free‘?

None of us stripped down, although I think my mom was contemplating it… We almost lost her to the allure of no tan lines!

We finally made it through the naked body parts and over to Kismet, we had lunch at Surf’s Out. It was lovely, we sat in the sun and enjoyed some blue cheese wedge salads, a panini and Pinot Grigio. After lunch, we walked back to where we parked, passing the lighthouse along the way. I love the Fire Island lighthouse. Every time I see it, it reminds me of home. It was also a bit more scenic than the nudie route…

For my birthday dinner one of my best friends Heather joined my parents, my grandfather, Colin and I at a hibachi Japanese restaurant called Gasho - it was so completely delicious. I got fried rice and the hibachi shrimp. SO good.

Got some great birthday presents too! Some money (going right to the tires… wooo hoooooo!), clothes, a beautiful J Crew necklace, a charm for my Pandora bracelet, gift cards, and a gorgeous camera! I am now the proud owner of the Canon Powershot SX200 IS.

In other birthday news… HAPPY BIRTHDAY AUDREY HEPBURN! Audrey has always been my ‘famous person’ idol. I’ve been slightly obsessed with her since I was little. She was one of the most elegant, beautiful, fashionable, talented and compassionate women to ever live. A talented actress, a style icon, a selfless humanitarian. Sabrina is my favorite Audrey Hepburn flick – if you haven’t seen it, please rent it soon!

I even dressed up as Audrey Senior year of college for Halloween!

Classy with the beer in hand. Hey, it was college.

Words to live by:

“For Attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run their fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.”
— Audrey Hepburn

Last night we went to Noir inside the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – it was amazing! If you haven’t yet, you need to head over there to try their weekly deal (everything on the bar menu for only $5-$4-$3-$2-$1) Monday-Thursday from 5pm-7pm. And go visit now, especially, because they have an outdoor patio – awesome for the warm weather!

Menu here – http://noir-bar.com/food/documents/foodmenu04.20.10.pdf

Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo and I can’t wait to enjoy a margarita! Goodnight! :)

Peace and quiet

I’m in the house by myself. I’m currently sitting in my room in peace and quiet. It’s honestly a miracle after the past few days I have had. I’ve been going non-stop and let me tell you – it is draining. Do you ever feel like all the energy is just sucked right out of you? Or that there aren’t enough hours in the day? Ugh, why can’t I be a superhero? They can do everything…

Anyway, I am SO SORRY for not posting yesterday and all of today! I’m not following the rules of ‘no excuses, blog like a champion.’ I’m ashamed of myself and will strive to be a better blogger everyday. Especially for you Jean!

So tonight I helped judge the science fair at Meg’s school (Bellesini Academy in Lawrence, all boys grades 5-8.) At first I felt stupid, ‘Wait what is the variable? The thing that stays the same or the thing that changes?’ ‘And the control is the opposite, right?’ Ugh, I was never good at science.

I learned a thing or two which was nice. The judging part was hard, they all did a nice job so I was throwing 5′s out left and right (scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest score.) I didn’t want the people tallying up the points to think my scoring was fishy, so I threw in a few 4′s and one or two 3′s – it was stressful. Oh, I also think it’s worth mentioning that the boys at Meg’s school all think Meg and I are twins – mainly because we’re white, tall and have blond hair. They get a reeeal kick out of saying ‘Miss Mescall ‘and having both of us turn around to respond. Oh adolescent boys!

No excuses, blog like a champion

I have been such a slacker; zero blogging this weekend. I am ashamed of myself. Please accept my most sincere apologies. My new motto will now be, ‘No excuses, blog like a champion.’

Happy Spring everyone! I hope everyone enjoyed the BEAUTIFUL weather we had over the weekend, especially Saturday.

Now even though we had such a great day, it was hard not to be jealous of this picture message I received from my sister Kelly who was hanging out with my parents in Vegas. I may be a weeee bit jealous but I’m also really happy they’re having such a good time!

Kelly's lounging poolside and Colleen is jealous.

I started my Saturday off with a 9am appointment at the Robert Jason Salon in Andover. I didn’t want to be inside at all, but since my roots were taking over I needed some highlights asap (not a natural blond, big surprise! Is there such thing as a ‘real blond’ anyway?)

This was my first time to the salon – I have given up on my old hair stylist due to the fact that a visit to her salon is like a glimpse into the life of one of the ‘Real Housewives of New Jersey’ (or Revere.) Also, the whole experience never takes less than five hours and you won’t leave without hearing an inappropriate story such as the time she got into a screaming match with her boyfriend in the driveway, which resulted in her breaking his windshield. To top it all off, they had ice-cold water to wash your hair – not exactly a pleasant experience. She always gave me a great cut and excellent highlights, but it’s time to move on. When you feel like your stylist should be paying you, instead of the other way around, it’s time to find a new one.

Back to the Robert Jason Salon… It was awesome! Everyone was so nice and the girl who did my hair (Ashley) did a wonderful job. I will definitely be going back. I highly recommend it.

Next, I convinced Colin to come for a run. My body was tired but since I’m training for the half marathon I knew I just had to push myself. The whole time during the run I was wishing SO BAD that I was just going for a walk, or just sitting on a bench, relaxing, enjoying the sun. I kept cramping up and I had to stop and walk a few times. Colin was doing way better than I was and he hasn’t been training for a race. It was beyond frustrating. I literally had to say Hail Marys throughout the run in order to get my mind off the fact that I was running (also to have God and his team up their on my side in case I croaked.) When we finished our run I had a bit of a breakdown. I just felt so disappointed with myself; I felt defeated. Luckily Colin gave me a really encouraging pep talk to help snap me out of it. In the end, I knew I had to get my run in for the day even though I didn’t want to, and I did. I finished. I didn’t just convince myself that it was OK to walk the rest of the way, I didn’t give up. That’s what’s gonna help me cross that finish line in April.

After our run we headed back to Newton (where Colin lives) he went to play basketball and I went in search of new shoes for our night out in Boston. I tried on some really cool heels at Target that I loved but felt way too tall in. This girl standing by me complimented how great they looked. She was extremely nice and eventually encouraged me to get them! I am really happy I did, so I owe her a thank you. Maybe she’s reading my famous blog right now…

Here are the shoes -  http://www.target.com/Mossimo-Palani-Gladiator-Sandals-Black/dp/B002OO7Z5I/ref=br_1_4?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=13836771&node=13836771&sr=1-4&searchRank=pmrank&searchPage=1&sessionID=182-8267774-4505357&searchSize=30&qid=

I’m roughly 6’5 in them, no big deal…

Saturday night a bunch of us went out for Danielle’s birthday. First we started the night off at Nuge and Christine’s (aka X) apartment; we had some drinks and a lovely dinner (including a cake, candles and a beautiful rendition of ‘happy birthday.’) Then we headed to Buskers which is over by The Garden. It was a really good time! The DJ played a lot of good music and we danced the whole time we were there. Total success.

My camera phone is a bit blurry. Xis lookin good though!

The lovely Rippa hailing a cab! (none of my friends have 'real' names by the way)

The beautiful birthday girl!

I heard about 3 new websites over the weekend and they’re awesome! Figured I would share…

When.com – http://www.when.com/ Lists all sorts of activities to do in your area, ranging from free events, sporting events, restaurant deals, etc.

Going.com – http://boston.going.com/ Similar deal with a more hip look to their website. People can post stuff they hear about and they also have a ‘recession busters’ section which lists cheap/free events.

Trails.com – http://www.trails.com/ ‘Your guide to the outdoors,’ You type in your area and they’ll give you places to explore on a nice day. Hopefully the good weather will continue. Fingers crossed…

Tourtracker.com – http://www.tourtracker.com/ The who-what-where-when of concerts.

Tomorrow the Soul Fire BBQ in Allston has an all you can eat wings special on Mondays from 5pm-10pm for $8.99. Get your wings however you like ‘em – buffalo, hickory smoked, spicy honey, Southern fried, apple bacon (featured flavor of the week.) http://www.soulfirebbq.com/ – 182 Harvard Ave, Allston, (617) 787-3003.

Today we took Lady to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Lawrence for a little bit, then relaxed the rest of the day. Went to church at 5:30 where I got to see two girls who volunteered the same year I did. It was a very nice surprise! We then went to Whole Foods, I got my groceries for the week (more strawberries and grapes which I already taste tested, and they are delicious.) Then Colin made some amazing burgers paired with equally amazing sweet potato fries with a maple glaze. Ooooweeee it was a good dinner!

It’s been a busy weekend and I’m looking at a busy week ahead so it’s time to get some sleep. Goodnight readers, hope you had a great weekend :)

PS- We’ve been watching the new show Life on the Discovery Channel and I’m definitely gonna have nightmares of Komodo Dragons tonight.

He's coming to get you!
