100 Days of Kindness, Day 56

Oh being home for Christmas is so nice. I took a few days off from work, so I’m extending my long weekend as much as I can. Where did the days go when I used to get a full month off in college? Even though I don’t get that luxurious break anymore, I’ll take a few days where my eyes can take a break from staring at my Outlook and enjoy a little more relaxation and family time. It’s well deserved isn’t it?

Today was enjoyable. We had a ton of snow which finally made it feel like real Christmas. We also saw my Aunt Susan, Uncle FD, Katie and Annie, which is always a treat. (It also involved Margarita pizza from Bertuccis which didn’t hurt).

When we got back we played bananagram and watched the Sound of Music (one of my all time favorites). I must say, my family really seemed to enjoy my beautiful rendition of ‘Climb Every Mountain’ (worst song in the movie) – it should probably count as my act of kindness today – sharing my beautiful voice with them.

Kelly also did my hair tonight which is exciting! This is the first time she has highlighted my hair since becoming beauty-stylist-extraordinaire. I’m still in the process of having it done, so hopefully it comes out A.OK. I’ll post some pictures of my transformation tomorrow as she is going to give me a fab new cut as well, but I think she may fall asleep if she does it now because it’s getting so late. Sleeping + scissors + my hair = not a good idea. I’ll wait til tomorrow thankyouverymuch.

My kindness today:

My poor grandfather is in the hospital. He had to go yesterday and they decided to keep him overnight and now he’s staying again tonight. He has cellulitis in his leg/foot and it was causing him pain. This is the second time the poor thing had to go to the hospital during a big occasion. First the wedding, now Christmas! Jeeze Pa, we can take a hint – if you don’t want to participate in family get-togethers just let us know – no need to go to the hospital!

Anyway, I’ll get to the point, we visited Pa in the hospital tonight. He was excited to see us and seemed to be in very good spirits! I think he likes the attention and having the older nurses to flirt with.

….Ok, I still have dye in my hair and I think I’ve lost Kelly… better go find her….

Merry Christmas! (And 100 Days of Kindness, Day 55)

“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled til his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought doesn’t come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?”

If I could choose something that was ‘a little bit more’ than clothes or books or gift certificates for my family, it would be:

To take away stress from my Dad’s life

To take away the worry from my Mom’s life

To give Meg and Matt strength to continue to work together as a (great) team

To help Patrick to stay on his path to success

To make Kelly realize how talented she is

To promise Molly that everything will be just fine. That growing up is tough, but she’s doing a great job at it

And to tell Colin that I’ll continue to love him and make him laugh every day

My kindness for today:

To be quite honest I usually don’t put money in the basket at church – not because I’m a cheapo, or a bad person – because I never have cash on me. Today I made sure I had cash and brought some with me. Christmas means putting money in the basket.

I also helped out with cleaning after dinner, and let’s be honest – I do not enjoy that – but I did it anyway, because I knew it would be appreciated and I knew I’d get yelled at if I didn’t.

My kindness for today:

Our tradition each year is to have a Secret Santa instead of getting each sibling a gift – I mean there are five of us (and now six with out fabulous addition of Matthew) so it’s tough buying presents for that many people. Instead we thought it would be better to concentrate on one person. I got Matt this year and am very excited! I think I did a good job and we’re exchanging presents in just a few minutes, so I hope he likes them.

100 Days of Kindness, Day 53

Christmas always seems to sneak up on us. This year I feel like it just totally blindsided me. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve? How did that happen? I guess this means I’m getting older. It used to feel like Christmas took sooooooooo looooong to get here when I was little. Unfortunately those days are long gone!

I feel like the last few weeks I’ve been hearing people tell me all these nice things they’ve done for people. It really, truly makes me happy.

I didn’t do anything extraordinarily nice today. I’ve taken a few days off next week to extend Christmas as long as possible, so today at work I got as much done (almost everything) as possible. I did this so I didn’t have to leave it for someone else. Everyone already has enough on their plates, they don’t need my stuff!

In some ways I love being like this. I love knowing I can take care of my own stuff, my own responsibilities – and pitch in when help is needed. However, I know I need to let people help me every now and then too. I have a hard time admitting I need or could use a little help. I guess I need to get over that – that’s why we work on teams.

Anyway, I feel good about my productive day, because you know what? That means I am currently on vacation for a few days. Merry Christmas to me! (and to you too!)

100 Days of Kindness, Days 46, 47, 48 and 49

I’ve missed a few days again – oops! The holiday season is a busy one that’s for sure.

Thursday was our office party at the BC Club in the Bank of America building downtown. It was a gorgeous place with delicious food. It was so fun having Colin there with me, getting the chance to meet everyone I work with.

My kindness for Thursday – following my friend Jess back to her apartment so we could then drive into the city together so she didn’t have to worry about driving. Luckily Colin drove me home so I didn’t have to worry about driving either! Good times all around.

My kindness for Friday – I had to get the inspection sticker replaced on my car (thank goodness that’s over with for now) and then gave Colin a ride into work. After I dropped him off and was headed to 93 N – I was stopped at a light where a man was asking for money. He was holding a cardboard sign and looked like he was freezing – it was so cold on Friday. I actually had cash on me (which is extremely rare) so I decided to give him a few bucks. Regardless of what this money went to, I’m happy I made this man smile. He was freezing his butt off and I was sitting in my warm car on my way to the job I truly enjoy. I had just dropped off my amazing boyfriend who I’m very much in love with and I was about to give my mom a call on my drive to say hi and chat. I had exciting plans after work and a fun weekend ahead. He was begging for money in the chilly Boston air at a stop light where most people were pretending he was invisible. He deserved that money and I hope he got a lot more.

My kindness for Saturday - I went to the Christmas Reflections show at Boston College with Colin’s sister Liz. I thought it was so nice that she asked me to go, plus her friend Julie was dancing in it so I wanted to see her perform. It was a great show!

My kindness for Sunday – Last year I got the Elf on the Shelf and some other goodies to send to the Preschool class I worked at the year I volunteered in Chicago. This year I wanted to do it again, so I headed to Target and bought a really cute Doctor’s set, a Diego puzzle, a Disney princess memory card game, playdoh and a Christmas book. I wrapped it up nice and will send it off to Chi-town (with love) tomorrow!
